About Coach Andy
Born in Houston on June 12, 1957, Coach Andy Stewart discovered his passion for sports at an early age. He played football for both Stratford High School in Houston and O. Perry Walker High in New Orleans, ran cross-country, and even walked on to the football team at LSU. However, it was on the track where Coach Andy truly found his calling, dedicating his career to the sport of running.
Andy was a proud coach, a successful running store owner, and an esteemed race director. In 1985, he opened Finish Line Sports, which quickly became a hub for local runners. Under his leadership, he organized beloved events such as the 30K, Sugar Land Turkey Trot, St. Paddy’s Half Marathon, and Try Andy’s Tri, each of which became a staple in the area’s race calendar.
Coach Andy’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he inspired, the community he built, and the sport to which he devoted his life.
Together with his family, the Houston Harriers decided to bring back the 30K in Coach Andy Stewart’s honor to celebrate his enduring impact on the running community and to pay tribute to his unwavering dedication, generosity, and the beloved traditions he helped create. Andy's brother, Steve Stewart, serves as an advisor on the race committee and several of Andy's friends volunteer for and run the race.
